Add followers to see this. It's the number brands ask for, though it means less on feeds that serve mostly non-followers.

These bands are directional, not official. No platform publishes engagement benchmarks, they shift over time, and they vary a lot by niche and account size. Use them to read a trend across your own posts, not to grade a single one.

Which number to actually use

Engagement rate was invented for follower-based feeds, where almost everyone who saw a post already followed the account. Dividing interactions by followers made sense there. Short-form broke that assumption: TikTok, Reels and Shorts push most videos to people who have never heard of you, so followers and viewers are largely different groups.

That is why a small account can post one video that reaches 200,000 strangers and register a follower-based engagement rate in the hundreds of percent, while a large account with loyal viewers reads as under 1%. Neither number describes what happened. Dividing by views does.

The follower-based rate still has one real use: brand deals are often priced on it, and media kits are expected to quote it. Know both, quote the one being asked for, and optimise against the by-views number.

What moves it

  • Endings. Engagement happens after the watch, so a clip that trails off gets views without reactions. A clear closing line — a question, a claim, a punchline — is where most of the gain is.
  • Saves and shares over likes. Both carry more weight than a like and both come from utility or surprise, not from being pleasant.
  • Comment bait that isn't bait. A genuine open question outperforms "comment below!" because people answer questions they actually have an opinion on.
  • Captions. Muted viewers can't engage with what they didn't follow, and most short-form watch time is muted.
  • Length discipline. A tight 30 seconds beats a loose 60 — every unnecessary second is another chance to leave before the part that earns a reaction.

Questions? Answers.

How do you calculate engagement rate?

Add up the interactions on a post — likes, comments, shares and saves — then divide by a base and multiply by 100. Which base you use matters: divide by views for short-form video, or by followers for the older follower-based rate that brands still ask for.

Should I use views or followers as the base?

For TikTok, Reels and Shorts, use views. Those feeds serve most videos to people who don't follow you, so a follower-based rate can read as absurdly high on a video that went out to strangers, or absurdly low on a large account. Follower-based is still the number most brand deals are priced on, which is why this calculator shows both.

What is a good engagement rate for short-form video?

Directionally, on a by-views basis: roughly 2–4.5% is typical on TikTok, 1.5–3% on Instagram Reels, and 1–2.5% on YouTube Shorts, with anything above those ranges counting as strong. No platform publishes official benchmarks and the numbers move, so treat them as a rough read across your own posts rather than a grade on any single one.

Do saves and shares count toward engagement?

Yes, and they matter more than likes. A share puts your video in front of a new person and a save signals it was worth returning to — both are stronger signals to a recommendation system than a like, which costs the viewer nothing.

My views are high but engagement is low. What does that mean?

Usually that the video was served widely but didn't finish well. People arrived, watched some, and left without reacting. That points at the middle and end of the clip rather than the hook — the hook clearly worked, or the views wouldn't be there.
