How to make podcast clips that get watched

A two-hour episode hides a dozen scroll-stopping moments. Here's how to find them, cut them, and post clips that pull listeners back to the full show.

1. Find the moments worth clipping

Not every minute of a podcast is clip-worthy. The segments that travel are self-contained: a surprising claim, a strong opinion, a story with a punchline, or a concrete tip someone can use today. If a clip needs ten seconds of setup to make sense, keep scrolling.

The fastest way to surface these is to work from the transcript. Skim for moments where the energy spikes — a laugh, a raised voice, a 'wait, really?' — and mark the line that pays off. Those are your in and out points.

Or skip the skim: paste the episode link below and Nova scores every segment and surfaces the strongest moments for you — free.

2. Keep clips between 20 and 60 seconds

Short-form rewards completion. A 30-second clip that gets watched to the end will out-reach a 90-second clip that loses people halfway. Start as close to the payoff as you can and cut the moment it lands — no slow intros, no goodbyes.

3. Reframe to vertical and keep the speaker centered

Podcasts are usually shot wide or in a two-shot, but TikTok, Reels, and Shorts are 9:16. Crop to vertical and track whoever's talking so the active speaker stays in frame through the back-and-forth. A static center-crop on a two-person show cuts off half the conversation.

4. Burn in captions

Most short-form is watched on mute. Word-by-word animated captions aren't optional — they're how the clip gets understood in the first second. Bold, high-contrast captions with a highlight on the key word keep eyes on the screen and lift completion rate.

5. Let AI do the heavy lifting

Doing all of the above by hand for every episode is a part-time job. An AI clipper transcribes the episode, scores every segment for shareability, picks the strongest moments, reframes them to vertical, and captions them automatically — turning a single recording into a week of posts in a few minutes.
